The Essence of Matcha

Matcha is more than a trend. It is a heritage product with over 800 years of tradition, deeply rooted in Japanese culture. Originally embraced by Buddhist monks as part of meditative rituals, Matcha continues to be appreciated today for its distinctive composition, culinary versatility, and ceremonial significance.

The Rarest Tea in the World

Matcha is made from the finest Tencha leaves, carefully cultivated in shaded fields to boost chlorophyll and amino acids. After harvest, the leaves are stone-ground into a delicate, jade-green powder.

This process, mastered by only a select few tea farmers, produces a concentrated form of green tea.

WHY IS MATCHA AN UNIQUE PRODUCT?

Unlike conventional green tea powders, authentic Matcha contains a distinctive composition of amino acids, including L-theanine, as well as naturally occurring caffeine and catechins. Because the finely milled tea leaves are consumed whole, Matcha combines the full aroma, delicate texture, and natural composition of the tea leaf in every sip. Unlike infused tea, the leaf is not merely extracted, but consumed in its entirety.

Aroma and Taste

Premium Matcha is appreciated for its rich umami profile, smooth texture, and subtle natural sweetness. Its vibrant green colour is considered an important indicator of quality and reflects careful cultivation and processing methods. High-quality Matcha is particularly valued for its refined taste, creamy mouthfeel, and balanced aromatic profile.

Health Benefits

Matcha naturally contains catechins, caffeine and the rare amino acid L-theanine – a combination that is rarely found in this form in any other tea. The exact composition varies depending on the cultivation method and the quality of processing, which is why the quality of the Matcha is crucial to preserving this natural nutritional profile in its entirety.

The Matcha Stroke Test

On the European market, various products are sold under the name “Matcha” without necessarily meeting the traditional standards of authentic Matcha. Since the term “Matcha” is not officially protected, there is no binding definition of the characteristics a product must fulfil in order to carry this name. As a result, low-quality or industrially milled teas are increasingly marketed as “Matcha”, even when their origin, leaf material, or production process cannot be clearly traced. Such products are often referred to as “Fake Matcha.”

This makes it all the more important to understand the quality differences within the Matcha category. A Matcha stroke test allows the visual quality of a Matcha powder to be assessed in a simple and practical way. High-quality Matcha is typically distinguished by a bright, vibrant emerald-green colour. Yellowish or brownish tones may indicate lower quality, oxidation, or less careful processing.
